Minerals are the most misunderstood part of bird nutrition and health. Grit is a poor source of minerals. The main function of grit is as digestive stone to help grind the seed in the gizzard. Wet grit is particularly harmful to birds. The bird requires many different minerals that are best provided in a powdered form. Excessive chewing of cages and branches is a common sign of a mineral deficiency. Heavy metal poisoning is a common sequel to a mineral deficiency.
